The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s classic trails. Known for its hut accommodations and gradual ascent, this route offers a unique and relatively comfortable trekking experience. Below is a six-day itinerary focusing on the key climbing days.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Ending Altitude: 9,000 ft / 2,725 m
  • Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Highlights: Begin the trek through lush, green rainforests, alive with the sounds of birds and monkeys. The trail leads you to Mandara Hut, where you’ll rest for the night.

Day 2 : Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Ending Altitude: 12,335 ft / 3,780 m
  • Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Highlights: The trail opens into alpine meadows and moorland, providing beautiful views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The hike is gentle but steady, giving your body time to adapt to the altitude as you make your way to Horombo Hut for the night.

  • Activities: Spend the day taking a short hike to Mawenzi Ridge, gaining elevation for better acclimatization. This day is essential for adjusting to the altitude and enjoying views of the peaks and the expansive terrain surrounding Kilimanjaro.

  • Highlights: Trek through the striking alpine desert, crossing barren landscapes with stunning rock formations. The Kibo Hut, located at the base of the summit, serves as the staging point for the final ascent.

Day 5 : Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo Hut

  • Starting Altitude: 15,520 ft / 4,730 m
  • Peak Altitude: 19,341 ft / 5,895 m
  • Trekking Time: 6-8 hours to summit, then 4-6 hours descent
  • Highlights: The summit push begins early, around 1 a.m., as you trek up the steep scree slopes. Reaching Gilman’s Point on the crater rim offers the first glimpse of the sunrise over Africa, followed by a final push to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro’s highest point. Celebrate your success, then descend to Horombo Hut for the night.

Day 6 : Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
