The Umbwe Route is known for being the steepest, most direct, and most challenging trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. While it offers a rewarding experience for experienced trekkers, the rapid ascent provides limited time for acclimatization. Here is a six-day itinerary focused on the key trekking days.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

  • Starting Altitude: 5,249 ft / 1,600 m
  • Ending Altitude: 9,400 ft / 2,800 m
  • Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Highlights: The trek begins through dense rainforest, with steep paths along a narrow ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp (also called Forest Caves) for an overnight stay.

Day 2 : Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Starting Altitude: 9,400 ft / 2,800 m
  • Ending Altitude: 13,000 ft / 3,900 m
  • Trekking Time: 4-6 hours
  • Highlights: The landscape changes to heather and open moorlands, with the trail climbing through exposed ridges. The day ends at Barranco Camp, located in the scenic Barranco Valley.

Day 3 : Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Highlights: Begin by ascending the iconic Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb, then descend through various valleys to reach Karanga Camp, a key acclimatization point along the route.

Day 4 : Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Ending Altitude: 15,500 ft / 4,600 m
  • Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Highlights: The ascent continues through rocky terrain to reach Barafu Camp, the final staging point for the summit push. Rest and prepare for the early summit climb.

Day 5 : Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

  • Starting Altitude: 15,500 ft / 4,600 m
  • Peak Altitude: 19,341 ft / 5,895 m
  • Ending Altitude: 10,170 ft / 3,100 m
  • Trekking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, then 4-6 hours descent
  • Highlights: Start in the early hours to reach Stella Point by sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 6 : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Highlights: Descend through the rainforest, concluding the journey at Mweka Gate, where you receive a certificate for successfully summiting Kilimanjaro.
